Wearing: Wilfred blazer, Zara V-neck sweater, Zara leather studded belt, Fidelity denim, red suede *rain* boots – brand unknown. (I’d like to tell you they’re Balmain, but…)

This is what I wore this evening to the Style Salon event at the Shangri-La. I was going for sophisticated, casual chic, all in the spirit of dressing for Paris. You see, I’ve been doing my research to understand the key elements of Parisian style, all of which add up to impossible chicness. Here are a few things I have learned:

1. Clothes are meant to flatter the body, not suck the body in, meaning, the French do not wear their jeans plastered to their legs as North Americans tend to do (good-bye spandex-cotton blend!).

2. Great style has a classic element to it, particularly the silhouette. Think tailored clothes that fit well, no matter what the trend. Maxi skirts? Hits you at the right spot and flatters the waist. Boxy, menswear inspired wool coats? Worn in proportion to the body – proportionate collar, pockets, cuff detailing – so that the body is flattered and not disguised.

3. Good quality fabrics and detailing really lends itself to the overall “polished-ness” of a look, and certainly extends the life of your garments.

4. Style is how you wear your clothes, not looking for a stand out piece that will wear you. What I mean is, styling your clothes the way you feel they look best, perhaps you like your blazer sleeves rolled up with the collar popped, or wearing your sweaters tucked into skirts rather than worn out, or adding a wild dash of color to your outfit through your sock choice, a la Jeremy Szafron! (Video chat to come!)

I am over the notion that have personal style means you are the one that stands out most in a room for your outlandish look. Great style is in the subtleties, in the nuances and most certainly in the way you carry yourself and go through life. Ever think about what the style of your life is? What do you eat? How do you eat? Go out, or grocery shop and cook in? What is your mode of transportation? How do you feed your brain, as in, do you read and what do you read? What stimulates your mind? Are you aware of how what you say and how you say it will shape the perception that people have of you? Are you organized? Do you act calmly, or are you in a state of chaos? What does your home look like, and most importantly, what kind of company do you keep? Lately I’ve been feeling very aware of the style of ones life, rather than just the style of their clothes. I think the full package is the most interesting. Wow, I digress. I must be going through some sort of self-discovery type phase. Speaking to my style, I am willing to note that I now think my apartment looks like one giant tea-party – it’s too girlie and my decorative details are too prim and petite. I need to scruff it up quite a bit.

I was going to take a good number of pictures this evening, however, there was a photographer present and so I’ll let her pictures do the work, rather than mine.

Night!

That’s what a young woman said to me as I marched down the street in my red suede buckled ankle boots. Why thank you stranger on the side walk, I did feel very fierce! Sadly I had to leave my DSLR at home last night, it might’ve been a bit creepy to take that big hunker of a camera on a date, so my little point-and-shoot had to do. (Hence why the photo isn’t so sharp). My date outfit last night:

Top: Outside of the fabulous Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel, Bottom: Standing between the two convention centres, but more important than the view is my snakeskin Pierre Cardin purse, obviously. Wearing: White blouse from I don’t know where, I got it years ago, H&M leather skirt, vintage purse and red suede boots found at Winners.

My first time dining at the posh new hotel! We had a drink in the Lobby Lounge, I had a cosmo and it was seriously the best cosmo I’ve ever had, and then went upstairs to Oru for dinner. Mmm the Korean short rib dish, just delicious. (T Hump: you get serious date cred). Then off for a walk through Gastown over to Chinatown to visit the Keefer. I’ve heard so much about it but hadn’t been yet. And yep, I walked the whole way in those boots! A note about the Keefer, great drinks and great atmosphere, but don’t go on a Tuesday night, we were the only people in the place. I suspect they are very busy on the weekends though.

That’s it for now dear readers, til later today when I come up with more thoughts for you!

Here I am prancing around my apartment in the morning hours before work. I consider blogging my work actually, my other work is really just a way to support it. And speaking of all things fashion-work related, I was recently told about a new fashion site that allows you to network with everyone and anyone in the fashion industry. It’s called Afingo, pronounced Uh-fingo, meaning fashion, and is what the four co-founders consider the “first fashion-centric online platform that merges a marketplace and a social network; a virtual tradeshow, showroom and industry directory enclosed within an online community where members of the fashion community will connect and interact.” Well now that’s a mouth full! I’ve just been introduced to Afingo, but I’ve already signed up! Find me: http://www.afingo.com/users/stylestruck

Thus far it seems the site has done a great job at making sure all details are covered; when you sign up you fill it all out, from what you do and where you’ve been educated to where you shop. Because the site is so new, only time will tell if it will be the next social networking spot for fashionistas, but in the mean time I’m looking forward to connecting with all you  fashionistas and fashionistos there!

Note: When you sign up for a profile, you won’t be asked for a password. The site sends a link with an opportunity to create a password shortly after you sign up, so be patient and it shall come.

And now back to the previous programming: StyleStruck Prances Around Her Teeny Apartment:

I’ve been dying to post about this new military style jacket I got while in Whistler. What my closet really needs is a good shot of Balmain, but for now a Guess look-a-like will do! And paired with my pink sequin skirt found at Patricia Field’s shop and Marc by Marc Jacobs cream patent leather mary-janes. Another Note: My hair is currently growing out, please bear with me as I endure the very awkward phases of growing ones hair out. I’d say I’m currently in phase one, ohh only about another 6 months of hair-hell to go through.
