These photos were taken Friday morning just before I went to meet Rae for a LOVE + MARK’D meeting at Starbucks. Which by the way, I am largely over. Starbucks serves average coffee at outrageous prices in a could-be-described-as blah environment. There is nothing special about it at all, very much unlike my preferred spots Giovane Cafe at the Fairmont Pacific Rim and Bel Cafe at the Hotel Georgia. We met purposely to discuss a marketing campaign for the card brand and were thinking of creating one with an anti-social media element to it, being that aside from a few well-intended instagram photos, our product is meant for the traditional mail system and has nothing to do with communication 2.0. I am very proud of what we came up with after spending two plus hours sitting in the Robson at Thurlow Starbucks. I must give props to Rae for being such a major part of the creative process, it’s amazing how much more innovative you can be when it is not just you circling ideas around in your own head. We are just in the beginning stages of creating the imagery to support the campaign and we hope to launch in early June. I hope you’ll support us!

Lately I’ve been playing around with my new-ish short hair, this weekend with a small-barrel curling iron. I helped a man at Starbucks who couldn’t find the right size of lid for his tall cup and afterwards he said, “thanks Marilyn.” It kinda made my day.

I purchased this book at Brooks Brothers a few months ago. While most of it is filled with helpful hints on how to be a proper lady, there are a few funny ideas, like this one. Had to share!

Tuesday morning and the alarm goes off, and I miss it. Then I realize I have 30 minutes to dress and get over to a DKNY fall fashion preview on South Granville – insert fashion panic here. (A fashion panic is different from the usual morning panic because it involves a lot of running around trying to find the right necklace with the right blouse – items that haven’t been worn to an event or featured in a blog post recently – and trying to achieve that fashion editor hair: perfectly, effortlessly messy, which obviously takes work.) Don’t let these casual shots fool you, there was no calm at the Haus of StyleStruck this morning.

Whatdya think of my little kitchen? It’s made for microwave meals, though I do my best to cook as much as I can in it. Don’t even bother telling me how much you envy my 1960′s tile laminate or counter tops, I already know it. (Ha!) On the fridge is a sweet bon bons bag I picked up in Paris (it was full of sweets at the time), a pink dry erase board and decorative jugs on top. My yellow mug is from Harrods and in it I’m drinking tea from Ladurée, another delight from Paris. The pine mirror that you see a smidgen of I made in wood-shop class back in high school. I actually have a few pieces in my home that I have made. And that unsightly brown box behind me by the door? Proud to say that is now empty as I’ve just assembled a new piece of “office” (but more realistically a section of living room) furniture for my new biz. Which will launch soon. Tease.

The DKNY Fashion Preview – I’m going to let the clothes and bags do the talking…

In the world of fashion, the Fall season is already upon us, with the cozy collections having being shown back in February and now beckoning us to don their trousers, blouses and woolly wraps. I am so for it. So ready for a change, I despise tiny tank tops and short shorts, I pull my denim cut offs on in disgust. Of course, mother nature disagrees. But she’s never been much for fashion ; rain, hail, wind? Of course there are fabulous things about summer: sangria on patios, strappy sandals, a tan and picnics in summer dresses, but still, Fall is just so much better. In the words of Candy Pratts Price, “September is the Jaaaannuary in Fashion.”

These past few weeks have been big for my relationship with the mail man. Parcels and packages are so much more fun to receive than those pesky bills! Not too long ago I pulled these toasty boots out of a giant box (poor mail man), courtesy of Cougar Boots. 50 Canadian fashion bloggers received the limited edition Pillow Boots (only 900 pairs were made); this is how I plan to style mine when the weather turns colder (soon, please). See how Jen of Her Waise Choice and Alicia of Alicia Fashionista styled theirs too!

P.S. Event Notice:

How many of you are not 100% sure of your career path or what your goals are for the next 5 or even 10 years of your life? And if you do know what goal you want to reach (I’d like to write a book), but don’t know how to reach that goal (where the heck do I start, who knows an editor?? A publisher??), then here’s a tip for you:

Heather White, a local Vancouver gal and entrepreneur with an incredible knack for understanding how to help people discover their own abilities and paths (and treasured friend), is hosting a workshop all about what you want your life to look like, it’s called: Life Design: A Lesson in Customization. Heather will be discussing:

Having a vision for your life
Goal Setting
Mental/Physical/Emotional/Spiritual Well-Being
Foundation Development
And much more
Find the workshop (to be held September 15th), here on EventBrite. I know most of us fashionistas are on a budget, so use the discount code word “thinktank,” and receive 25% off the ticket price. What you will spend on a ticket you will reap back and much, much more after a session with Heather. Remember how I mentioned I made a big life decision and decided to go into biz for myself? That liberating decision was made largely in part due to a long conversation Heather and I had. Happy discovering!

Shall we talk about how this all started? It’s certainly not everyday I bring home a Dior bag as big as me.

We started the day out with a stroll down the popular shopping street Champs Elysées, but of course not before a banana and Nutella crepe from our favourite boulangerie!

We visited the Arc de Triomphe, and as you can see had a little fun at Louis Vuitton

I found this fabulous LV authored guide book of NYC – they’ve created a series of some of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities. I most certainly plan on returning to Manhattan again and again, and why not have the LV guide when I do? Until then it shall be a very nice addition to the coffee table. And they wrapped it soo nicely.

After conquering Champs Elysées we turned down the Rue Montaigne where the heavy hitters live. We’re talkin Prada, Chanel, Sonia Rykiel, Fendi and Gucci, among others. We came across this gorgeous hotel along the way, the Plaza Athénée, can you recognize it? I’ll give you a hint…

Oh yes, for all you Sex and the City lovers, this is indeed the hotel where Carrie bradshaw stayed in Paris. I shall never forget the scene where she squealed when she saw the Eiffel Tower for the first time. And in case you’re wondering, rates at the Plaza Athénée start at about €800.00. Then Carrie went to Dior, and I did too…

{ Wearing: Brooks Brothers chambray shirt, H&M tank, Zara belt, trousers and sandals. Armani sunnies, Fossil watch and Gianni Chiarini carryall }

I took great pleasure in walking down the Rue Montaigne with this ridiculously ENORMOUS bag, as I suspect it gave people the opportunity to think of what a big spender I am. In fact, this bag holds two overly packaged, rather small Dior pieces for the home. Small, but fabulous. This Dior store is the only location that houses a “gift” compartment. What they mean by “gift” is beautiful Dior pieces like crystal, glassware, tableware, blankets, trays, decorative pieces, bedding etc. that a very wealthy person might want to bring back for someone. This to me was more like the “splurge on your own home if your credit card can handle it” section. As I mentioned, I picked out two pieces, a small white decorative tray for displaying perhaps perfume and a candle, and two white ceramic heart-shaped bowls that came as a set, one smaller than the other and both printed with “Dior” on the underside. Both of my purchases were rather reasonable I thought, for Dior anyhow. Then I bought a lipstick and things really got out of hand. Tthey really like their packaging at Dior, and so we have “the unwrapping of Dior” next:

I am just in love with this little tray. Too cute. I didn’t unpack the other purchase; those two bowls, as they’re quite breakable and I figured to travel with them I better leave them packed as the experts packed them. I did have to leave the fab Dior boxes behind at our Paris hotel though (we’re in Provence now). They were just too big to bring along. Just to note, while we were in the Dior store I was in heaven, naturally, and I said to Marisa, “Wow, I love Dior!,” and the gentleman who was helping us said, “No, you must sayJ’adore Dior!‘” And so I do. J’adore Dior.

Mmmm, it was so good. The morning we left Stratford-upon-Avon we visited a very darling bakery called Box Brownie, which understandably, is famous for their delicious brownies. However, I was too tempted by this lemon tart to pass it up! Yumm.

{ In front of the birth place of Shakespeare – this house is from the early 1500s! I figured I’d make myself really stand out as a tourist with this very casually British umbrella }

{ Shortly after we boarded our train back to London! Just before leaving Vancouver on the morning we flew out, I was having a freak out moment about packing my carry-on bag. I brought my leather carry-all [seen in the above photo], but deemed it not big enough. [A girl's got a lot of stuff to fly with!] This MK canvas bag has come in very handy over the trip! Canvas bag gifted as a swag bag at the MK store opening }

{ Wearing: Zara sweater, Brooks Brothers linen blouse, Fidelity denim, Zara flats, Michael Kors watch, leather & gold bracelet from a stand in SoHo, NYC }

Oh, and did I mention that last Sunday I split my pants? It was my worst day of this trip so far, after a rather miserable day out I get back to the hotel, sit down on the bed and cross my leg under me. Riiiipp. My pants ripped right in the place where you wouldn’t want them to… So train time was mend time with my new 1-pound mending kit!

Stitch, stitch, stitch.

It’s Saturday night now, about 1:15 am here in London and time for bed! We had a most wonderful dinner at Beach Blanket Babylon in Notting Hill! And then of course I had a potent cosmo in the lounge afterwards, I have made it my mission to try a cosmo in every city I visit. So far, tonight’s at Babylon and the cosmo at Vancouver‘s Pacific Rim Fairmont Lobby Lounge are neck and neck for my top favourites. That said, I never did have one at The Plaza. So I shall have to for a fair comparison. ; )

Hello darlings (dah-lings), as the Brits say.

{ White linen blouse from Brooks Brothers – have you seen their blog?? You must! - Zara skirt, vintage Pierre Cardin clutch, Zara flats & Fossil watch }

Dressed and en route to dinner in Chelsea with my girl friend’s family who live here in London. They took us to Bluebird, a fabulous spot in the Chelsea area that was quite a “see and be seen” kind of place (a fashionista’s favourite). Everyone dining there was very smartly dressed, from their designer shoes to their coiffed hair and perfectly casual rolled up shirts on the men. Men take note: the Brits have one over on you in style; everyone wears a nicely tailored colourful shirt (pastel shades), tucked into classic dark denim, suede loafers, a gorgeous leather belt and some sort of smart hair style, usually a side part. It’s all very dapper here in England. (I must make a note though, that my boyfriend also dresses this way and so for that I swoon and say thank goodness and lucky me – a Vancouver man who really knows how to dress. Let’s go off on a wee tangent for a moment: last Saturday night boyfriend, a.k.a. George, picked me up to go to Joe Fortes for dinner wearing slim dark denim, a white collared shirt under a grey sport jacket complete with a slim back tie, black leather shoes and a roly. I died. So, so pleased!)

We are currently staying in London’s Kensington area where you find rows upon rows of gorgeous white town house with black gates and fresh flowers. It’s really quite a beautiful spot of London, we’re lucky to be staying here!

For me the waiting period is that time between when I submit my answers and photos to a publication and when they publish their article. I never know exactly what will make it into the article or interview, or which images they’ll choose and I find myself getting a little antsy. The picture above is one of a few I recently submitted to a Canadian online magazine for an interview piece. Looking forward to seeing it! : ) In the meantime, I couldn’t wait to share with you a couple of new purchases… (I just can’t seem to stop). These sequined shorts are from, would you believe it, Joe Fresh! They’re part of their Fresh off the Runway collection. I look forward to pairing them with my new white linen blouse from Brooks Brothers this August when my girlfriend and I visit Monaco. The heels are a new as well, I found them lonely, sitting on a shelf as part of the Holt Renfrew summer sale. (GO see it. AMAZING.) I was thrilled to find these neutral Miu Mius as my nude patent leather Stuart Weitzmans have just seen one too many dance floors and cobble stone streets. The top is a vintage find from a shop on Main St. in about 2006. I rarely wear leopard print anymore, but every now and then one must. Today was that day for me.

That’s it for now!

This past weekend I went over to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island to stay with my Dad. For as long as I can remember he has had this boat, Chelsea II. I have so many memories of jumping off it into the water, zooming around in the zodiak we pull behind Chelsea, steering her and just generally cozying up in the wheelhouse with sheepskins, lots of blankets and classic Dean Martin tunes. (So that’s where my love of sheepskin and Deano comes from!) For this nautical trip I was particularly excited to pack, nearly everything I brought was a piece that has been waiting for a boat. Like this sweater for instance, it’s a Lilly Pulitzer pull over from about 2008, covered in navy stripes, gold finishing at the hem and cuffs and gold detailed buttons leading into a sailor-like roll-down collar. I adore this sweater. {Wearing: Lilly Pulitzer sweater, H&M tank, Seven for all Mankind denim, Michael Kors tortoiseshell style watch, pearl studs, Carrera sunnies and red suede Vans low tops }

{ On either side of the wheel are two areas just big enough for my sister and I to sit there while Dad navigated when we were about five or six. I now choose to take one of the comfy bench seats just back from here, as I’m a bit bigger now }

{ Wearing: Brooks Brothers chambray shirt, H&M sunnies }

{ Lunch fit for a deck on the Pacific ocean: chilled Keiths, sour dough bread sandwhiches with mortadella, sweet organic mustard, butter lettuce and fresh tomatoes }

{ Evening view from the deck looking onto the aft cabin, with kayaks above }

{ Waiting to go kayaking while Dad gets our double sorted out from the roof to the water – we paddled around Ruxton Island, about a 55 minute journey and just gorgeous. We even had a visitor, a seal came right up to the kayak! Wearing: Alternative Apparel pull over, vintage denim cut offs, New Era Yankees cap, pearl studs }

Time to get my head out of the clouds and back to the work in front of me. But what a relaxing, enjoyable trip it was. If you’re a boat person too, and care to know any more about our boat, click the picture below!

I recently was given the pleasure of a guided tour through the many fabulously merchandised sections of our Brooks Brothers store on Alberni St. Also home to Hermes, Tiffany’s, Louis Vuitton, Betsey Johnson, Blu Bird, Coast, Italian Kitchen and Agent Provocateur, Alberni St. has certainly become a shopping destination of the rich and famous young. I found myself happily wandering around many racks and shelves of gorgeous, luxurious polos, supima cotton shirts, thick cable-knit jumpers and rich leathers, all perfectly befitting the lady who lunches. Brooks Brothers is my traditionally classic, preppy heaven.

Absolutely dying for the weekender bag on the left. Thick canvas with genuine leather trimming… How fabulous for a few days away in the Cotswalds (English country side). Oh wait, I’m doing that come July. Perhaps I need this bag. Need. Below, a colorful assortment of ladies’ polos. Want. Further below, fine perfumes and creams.

I’d title the above pictures, “things men should wear, and how they should wear it.”

Two above: Stripes go to sea. I really appreciated all the effort put into the styling and merchandising of the store. And I would take up golf purely so that I could own and tote around this lovely golf bag, above. Gold detailing is the new way to my heart.

And now, for a few of my Brooks Brother obsessions:

A perfectly classic ostrich skin tote. Below: a little boys’ chambray shirt in a size L… I bet I could fit into that…

{ I’m wearing: white shrunken Zara jacket, H&M tank, Fidelity denim, Stella & Dot rings }

I see the crew neck sweater (two above) paired with white denim shorts for boat trips, and the sumptuous cable knit V-neck pull over paired with denim cut offs and little white sneakers. And big Ray Bans. Prepster for days.

Snapped in the dressing room! Why hello little boys’ size L chambray shirt! This one came home with me, as did a white linen little boys’ shirt. They’re the perfect boyfriend style button-ups! And those white buttons? Not plastic as we’ve come to expect on our shirts ladies, but real mother of pearl. It’s all in the details!

Up, up above in the land of feminine flats… a soft pair of cognac colored leather slip ons. So chic. Gold buttons adoring mens’ suit jackets (who doesn’t love a man in a navy blazer with gold buttons? So presidential!) and the perfect stripey mens’ sweater. Imagine a tall dark and handsome in this, dark denim and aviators. Delicious.

All in all I would say my visit to Brooks Brothers was positively dreamy and perfectly timed, seeing as I’ll be spending this weekend on my Dad’s boat on the Sunshine Coast, and traveling to Europe in July. My new white linen shirt will be tres parfait in Bordeaux! (Boating weekend pictures to come Monday! You better believe I pulled out my Lilly Pulitzer nautical white and navy striped sweater, complete with detailed gold buttons and a roll-down collar. Now to get myself some Sperry Topsiders…)

Oh, and ladies and gents, don’t forget! It’s almost Father’s Day, and if you need a gift, Brooks Brothers is currently offering a sale on their beautiful silk ties! Not to mention that I’m sure your Pappa would adore a new cardigan or polo. Happy Shopping!

Adorable ladies' etiquette books. I chose the "How to be a Lady" book. I plan to learn how to properly set a table and find out when pearls are and are not acceptable. Evidently being a lady calls for a lot of rules.
